Glenn Miller
A/Deputy Under Treasurer

Glenn Miller joined Queensland Treasury in 2001, gaining experience in areas such as Intergovernmental Relations and Natural Resources prior to moving to the Fiscal Management division over a decade ago to take on a revenue forecasting and policy role.

For the past two years, Glenn has been in the role of Assistant Under Treasurer of the Fiscal Management division, which is responsible for advising government on the budget position, preparing the whole of Government financial statements, managing the State’s financial assets and liabilities and developing financial management and accounting policy.

Glenn is currently the acting Deputy Under Treasurer of the Economics and Fiscal Coordination Group, which encompasses the Fiscal Management division, Economic Strategy division and the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office.

Glenn’s presentation will cover the current Queensland budget and economic environment, in the context of financial sustainability.

Anna Moynihan
Conference MC

Anna is a successful leader at senior executive level in both the government and not-for-profit sectors in strategic social policy, strategic planning and performance, program design and project management.  A social worker by profession, she has worked in disability, child protection, as well as regional and tertiary hospitals.  Anna is a high performing leader and strategic thinker who delivers excellent results in complex environments, cuts through complexity to get to the heart of the matter and brings out the best in people. 

Establishing her consultancy business at the end of 2015, she counts Queensland Treasury, the Departments of the Premier and Cabinet, Health, Housing and Public Works and Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services amongst her clients.

We are fortunate to have Anna as our Master of Ceremonies for Wednesday’s presentations.
 
Sebastian (Seb) Terry

Known worldwide for pursuing an incredible list of 100 Things that he wants to achieve before he dies, Sebastian Terry’s story is surprisingly not about a bucket list. It’s about something more far reaching; permission, choice, growth and connection.

Glenn Azar spent 17 years in the Australian Army serving on operations in active and non-active combat zones where he specialised in Aero-Medical Evacuations as a helicopter combat medic.

Glenn's motto in life is #notdeadyet. It's the foundation of why he does what he does and why he believes everyone has the capability and in fact the responsibility to live extraordinary lives. Brett Thebault

Brett is a Director at Aginic, a specialist Business Intelligence consultancy based in Brisbane. Originally from the UK, he has a maths background and worked with a niche analytics company in London for 6 years prior to moving to Brisbane to set-up the Ernst & Young Analytics team in 2011.

Brett, together with Marty Conneely, then span-off Aginic in 2014 to focus on the rapid moving trends in BI in Queensland and across Australia. Brett specialises in using data to help improve performance and reduce costs for organisations and works across a broad range of industries including Health, Government and Commercial.

 
Martin Fletcher

Martin is the Head of Productivity for the Institutional Banking & Markets division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This division is responsible for managing the Group’s relationships with major corporate, institutional and government clients and providing a full range of capital raising, transactional and risk management products and services.
 
Martin is a GE-certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Black with over 20yrs of practical experience in designing, embedding and sustaining Operational Excellence programs across a wide variety of organisations and industry sectors. John Peters
Director of Economics
Commonwealth Bank

John Peters is a Director, Economics in CBA Global Markets Research and is responsible for communicating the bank’s views to clients on trends in the Australian and international economies as well as the likely effect on interest rates and currency markets. In John’s capacity as a senior economist in Global Markets Research, he is a regular conference presenter and media commentator. 



John has been involved in financial markets for over 30 years and joined the Commonwealth Bank in 2003. John previously worked as a Senior International Economist at Westpac and as Chief Economist at CIBC Australia, and Midland International Australia Ltd. 



John has also worked as a senior economic policy adviser in the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Federal Treasury. He has also spent time working as an economics writer on the Australian Financial Review and Dow Jones Telerate newswire.

Brett Winterford

Brett Winterford is the Senior Manager of Cyber Outreach and Research at Commonwealth Bank. In his current role, Brett provides cyber security advice and resources to Australian businesses and government agencies, and works with Universities and research bodies to develop cyber security curriculum and research programs. 



Brett has worked as a journalist, commentator and educator in Australia’s technology sector for over 15 years.

Leandre’s focus over the last number of years has been on providing financial advisory services within large Federal Government agencies, specifically focussing on providing advice to executive decision makers regarding strategic financial decisions, funding, budgeting and forecasting, as well as the financial and accounting implications of those decisions. Stephanie Serhan

Stephanie Serhan is a Client Manager in Deloitte’s Assurance and Advisory team. She has experience in advising government departments through change and supporting the implementation of strategic and operational planning.

Stephanie’s technical expertise stems from lecturing Financial Accounting and Business courses at various universities across Australia for over 10 years.

Stephanie has been at the forefront of State politics and departmental thinking, through her role as a founding executive board member of Queensland’s political think tank, TJ Ryan Foundation.


 
Shashank Neelamraju

Department of Education and Training

Shashank is finance systems and banking process expert and has worked extensively on delivering banking related innovations within Queensland Government. He has project managed the largest banking innovation for Department of Education and Training (DET) which has resulted in not only increased security and compliance but also greater efficiencies across schools in Queensland. This project was also nominated for the Premier's Awards for Excellence.

Shashank is extremely passionate about automation and the need to go cashless and this drive has resulted in successful electronic solution implementations which have positively impacted over half a million school customers across Queensland
 
Shashank holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) specialising in Accounting and Finance and is currently pursuing his Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) qualification. Shashank joined DET in 2014 after spending five plus years assisting other government departments in annual financial statement preparations and implementing banking processes and products to increase efficiency.

Brooke MacKenzie

Brooke is currently the Director (Business Solutions and Reporting) within DNRM, is an advisor on the Queensland Health Financial System Renewal project board, and was the Technical Project Director for the implementation of the S/4 HANA Simple Finance solution for DNRM.

Prior to this, Brooke was the Director of Finance within DNRM, and has had roles in both Management and Financial accounting areas in various Government departments over her 17 year career. She is a qualified Accountant and CPA, has 3 children under 7 years old and has mastered the art of functioning without a full night sleep.

 
Brad Irvine

Brad Irvine is a passionate professional with more than 20 years’ experience across various Queensland State Government agencies as well as the private sector.

Brad has extensive experience across a wide range of leadership, management and project functions. Brad has successfully led multiple transformational, procurement and business improvement programs.

In Brad’s current role as Director (Procurement Services) within the Chief Procurement Office of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, he is responsible for driving improved procurement services and support across Transport and Main Roads.

Brad has a passion for reform, customer focus, business improvement and developing teams to deliver successful business outcomes.

 
Cameron Johns

Over 20+ years as an innovation practitioner, Cameron has helped numerous inventors, start-ups, SMEs and government agencies with business model innovation. He has also facilitated collaborations between research organisations industry; and empowered not-for-profits to generate commercial success and sustainability. Danette Fenton-Menzies

Danette is Director of Learning for Magical Learning.  She is a CPA and Chartered Accountant with over twenty-five years’ experience in both the private and public sectors.

Danette career has included working for several of the ‘Big Four’ Accounting firms as well as the Department of Finance, AusAID and the National Transmission Agency.  Danette was also Financial Controller for ntl Australia Ltd and CFO at Safe Work Australia. 

Danette designs and facilitates a range of finance and leadership workshops that are customised for specific clients. Danette’s strengths include her passion to help others learn new things, making dry topics relevant and interesting and being able to explain technical concepts in plain English.

Danette is also an Executive Coach.


 
Richard Cassidy

Richard is an experienced, results-orientated executive with over 15 years’ experience in a variety of leadership roles within the public and private sectors, across a range of industries.
 
Since relocating to Brisbane in 2008 from New Zealand, Richard has strong public sector and consulting experience helping organisations to undertake large complex reform programs either in a procurement context or requiring significant procurement activity.
 
Richard has a wide range of skills and experience including: strategy development, portfolio, program and project management, procurement and commissioning, complex stakeholder engagement and change management.
 
Outside of work Richard is a keen sailor and recreational cyclist.


 
Stuart McCosh

Stuart McCosh joined the Office of the Commonwealth Games as Finance Manager in 2014.

Stuart began his career with the Queensland State Government in 2007 and prior to his role in the OCG, he worked for the Queensland Public Service during which time he has worked for numerous agencies including the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Department of Justice and Attorney-General and Legal Aid Queensland.

Stuart oversees the consolidated Commonwealth Games budget and financial reporting, providing high-level strategic financial advice to executives managing the delivery of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Stuart completed a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) at the University of Southern Queensland in 1998 and became a CPA earlier this year.

Katherine Winlaw

Katherine Winlaw is Manager, Workforce Strategy with the Public Service Commission. For the past decade her work in the Queensland public sector in strategic planning and organisational development has focused on supporting organisations and leaders to solve complex workforce issues and shape the future public service workforce.

Her previous experience in the private sector as a management and human resource consultant, saw Katherine deliver successful outcomes in strategic planning and reviews, leadership and team development, and benchmark study tours for Australasian senior executives to high performing global organisations.

Katherine played a key role in the team working on the Queensland public sector 10 year human capital outlook and 3 year strategic roadmap and continues to deliver presentations on the Future of Work in relation to the two. 

Katherine’s key area of interest in wellbeing has seen her more recently lead the co-design and development of the sector’s Be healthy, be safe, be well framework aimed at creating healthier, safer workplaces where people can thrive. 

She is a Certified Practitioner with Australian Human Resource Institute and an internationally registered Arts Psychotherapist with recently published research on promoting employee well-being using mindful art therapy.


 
Kris Trott

Queensland Alliance for Mental Health Ltd

Kris Trott is the CEO of the Queensland Alliance for Mental Health Ltd (QAMH).  QAMH is the peak body for the community managed mental health sector in Queensland.
 
Kris is Chair, Queensland Transition to NDIS for Mental Health Strategic Forum, Member of the Queensland Transition Advisory Group, Member of the Executive Leadership Group of Community Mental Health Australia and several other strategic committees in the mental health sector. 

Kris started her career as an accountant and she holds degrees in Commerce majoring in Finance and Accounting, Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance, Graduate Diploma in Company Directorship and Governance, and is a Chartered Practicing Accountant.

Kris is a strategic problem solver with experience predominately in the education and health sectors, including mental health.


 
Rachael Vagg
Sector Director
Queensland Audit Office

Rachel is currently a Sector Director for the Queensland Audit Office where she leads the financial audits within the energy, water and natural resources sectors. She is responsible for providing sector based analysis to Parliament with annual reports on the financial performance and sustainability of the energy and water sectors.

Rachel has 20 years’ experience in public sector auditing, including previously delivering the role of Technical Director for financial reporting, and providing treasury products and valuation audits. Rachel is also part of project advisory panels for the Australian Accounting Standards Board.

 
Brendan Worrall

Brendan Worrall has extensive experience in senior executive roles in both public practice and the Queensland public sector. Prior to joining QAO, Brendan was the Crowe Horwath Managing Partner for Audit and Assurance across Australia and New Zealand. Brendan’s previous roles in government include Assistant Auditor-General at the Queensland Audit Office and Chief Financial Officer for Queensland Treasury. 

He is the chief executive and accountable officer for the Queensland Audit Office, and an independent officer of Queensland’s parliament. Brendan is the 23rd Auditor-General.

Liz Wells
A/Under Treasurer of the Fiscal Management division

Liz Wells joined Queensland Treasury in 1999, moving from the Commonwealth Department of Finance to join the original Tridata team. Liz’s roles in Queensland Treasury have included Principal Analyst in the Fiscal Strategy team, Director Collections in the Office of State Revenue, Director of the Government Banking Unit throughout the implementation of the most recent banking contracts, and a stint as Director Finance/CFO.

For the past year, Liz has returned to Fiscal Strategy as Director, and is responsible for advising government on the State Budget position, revenue policy, managing the State’s financial assets and liabilities, developing financial management policies and legislation.

Liz is currently the acting Assistant Under Treasurer of the Fiscal Management division, which also includes whole of Government financial reporting, accounting policy and the Tridata team.

Prior to joining the Public Service she worked as a freelance musician.

 
Nathan Hatherly

Nathan has worked in banking and finance for over 12 years, with the last 7 of those spent with QTC. Nathan has helped structure and shape Treasury Management strategies and functions across government during his time at QTC. After many years focused on the Government Owned Corporation sector culminating in working on the establishment of Energy Queensland, Nathan has worked closely with Queensland Treasury in recent times to bring continued focus on Sustainable Finance at a whole-of-State level.

Prior to QTC Nathan held roles with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and ANZ Banking Group in Corporate and Institutional Banking roles and holds a Bachelor of Economics (International Trade and Finance) and Masters of Commerce (Applied Finance) both from the University of Queensland.

Jason Beard is a Provisional Psychologist. He is an essential part of the Strive Coaching team and one of the members of the Strive family. He combines a broad understanding of individual and organisational change with personal experience. Jason has a range of experience working across a variety of private sector, government, community and organisational settings to assist with improving staff wellbeing and organisational outcomes.

Jason has completed his Masters of Counselling Psychology and has over five years of occupational rehabilitation experience. He has an interest in developing leadership capability, individual performance, high performance teams, and wellbeing at work, with particular interest and experience in executive coaching, team facilitation, and facilitating training and workshops.


 
Wanda Britton

Wanda’s role centres around using a customer based design methodologies, developing the strategic pipeline of change by applying human centred design techniques to design and execute strategic change activities to meet Sunsuper long term strategic objectives.

Prior to this role Wanda was the Head of Product for Sunsuper, leading the superannuation, retirement, insurance products and  member incentives teams with the responsibility for develop member centric superannuation products and member benefits that provide amazing outcomes for members in retirement, including insurance solutions that focus on member needs, adequacy and sustainability.

Wanda has worked in the financial service sector for over 20 years specialising in Retail and Group Insurance as well as Superannuation sector.  Wanda is a passionate advocate for the financial services industry and in particular helping every day Australians achieve their retirement outcomes.

 
Joshua van Gestel
National Manager, Education

Based in Sydney, Joshua is responsible for development of overarching education strategy and delivery methodologies as well as the development of education for intermediaries (including Employer representatives).

Joshua has: A Diploma of Financial Planning and a Cert IV in Workplace Education and Assessment, and 20 years’ experience within Financial Services and Financial Media organisations, including Management, Operational and Education roles.

William Pegg
Director and Founder

William Pegg is an entrepreneur, a business author and the Director and founder of Synthesis Group. He specialises in working with executive managers in both the private and public sectors for greater financial performance - the focus, a better performing supply base.

 
William’s studied environmental sciences in Sydney and graduated when these jobs were just not popular - so he shifted to business. His origins were in multinational FMCG, manufacturing and service firms. There he worked in supply chain, moved into finance and now helps organisations implement fit-for-purpose best practice tactics and strategy, adapted from leading Tier 1 organisations.
 
A passionate educator, William writes, speaks, advises and comments on profit and growth strategies for business. A husband, father and keen cyclist, William calls Brisbane home.
